INDIA TRAVEL - LITTLE KNOWN WONDERS OF INDIA PART 2 - HIRAKUD DAM

Hi Friends! I am back with the second part of my series on the Little known wonders of India. Today I will talk about one of the largest dams in the word. It is HIRAKUD DAM. It is located in Sambalpur district of the sate of Odisha (formerly Orrisa).

Hirakud Dam is built across Mahanadi River, about 15 kms from Sambalpur and is 25.79 kms long. It was built and formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India in January 1957. People say it is the best mix of Nature and Science to serve mankind.

During winters, you can see migratory birds which come here from Siberia. One of the natural wonders of Hirakud Dam is Cattle Island, which is located at one end of the dam. It is very famous for the wild cattle, which are found here. It is located at a distance of 90 kms from main Sambalpur city.

The cattle found in Cattle Island are quiet big as compared to normal cattle and they are more wild than the cattle who live among humans. You can reach this island by Yacht.
The Dam also has a wild life sanctuary by the name of Debrigarh Wild Life Sanctuary.

Do visit this place for a beautiful view of nature and marvel of science. It is a very nice place for picnic.

I will be back shortly with next little known wonder of India.

Till then, Happy Traveling and take care!!
