INDIA TRAVEL - LESSER KNOWN WONDERS OF INDIA - DUDHSAGAR FALLS

I am going to run a series on some of the lesser-known wonder places of India. So fasten your seat belts and be prepared to travel with me to some of the most beautiful and less explored locations across India.

I am going to start with DUDHSAGAR FALLS in Goa.

DUDHSAGAR FALLS, Goa :

One of the most wonderful sights, Dudhsagar waterfalls is one of India's tallest waterfalls with a height of 1017 ft (310 meters) and an average width of 30 mts.. It is located on river Mandovi on the border of Goa and Karnataka states in Goa. It is 60 km from Panaji, the capital of Goa and 46 km from Madgaon in Goa. It is about 80 km from Belgaum in Karnataka.

The streams of white water jetting out from the falls give an illusion of milk, and that is where it draws its name from. Dudhsagar in Hindi means 'Sea of Milk'. It is a part of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

The waterfall provides a wonderful sight as it splits into three streams while it falls over an almost vertical cliff. The area around falls is forested and is home to various wild animals and birds. If you are a wildlife lover and are lucky, you may even spot some of them.

Dudhsagar falls has a legend attached to it. It is believed that King of the Ghats had a daughter. This princess was very beautiful yet very modest. She believed that purity of heart, body, and soul was very essential. She used to take bath daily in a lake near the castle. After the bath, she would be surrounded by her handmaidens and would drink a jug of milk. One day, while she was having the milk, a young and handsome prince happened to pass by. He got attracted to hearing the chatter and laughter of the ladies and started looking on. The princess was scantily clad in her bathing attire and was much embarrassed. Her handmaidens immediately poured milk in front of her to form a kind of curtain, so that she could wear her clothes. That curtain of milk is the namesake of Dudhsagar.

HOW TO REACH: To reach Dudhsagar falls, one must go by foot or by rail, although there is a bumpy road too, where you can go by jeep. Even then, you will have to trek for about one km.
